Jerusalem (October 2023) — Israel’s security cabinet has approved a plan to escalate military operations in the Gaza Strip, marking a significant shift in the ongoing conflict with Hamas. A senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the ministers unanimously endorsed the operational plan during a meeting on Monday.
The approved strategy includes intensifying air and ground operations in Gaza, with the possibility of occupying certain areas to maintain control over captured territories. Military Chief Eyal Zamir announced that “tens of thousands” of reservists would be called up this week to support the expanded offensive.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the urgency of the new measures, noting that they aim to weaken Hamas’s capabilities and restore security for Israeli citizens. “We are moving from tactical raids to a broader strategy that includes holding specific territories for as long as necessary,” Netanyahu said in a statement released by his office.
The cabinet also discussed frameworks for allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza, which has been under a complete blockade since earlier this month. While no concrete timeline was provided, officials indicated that they are considering ways to facilitate the entry of essential supplies without enabling Hamas to exploit these resources.
However, the blockade has raised international concerns. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating rapidly. Describing the conditions as “beyond imagination,” the agency called for immediate action to alleviate the suffering of civilians.
Netanyahu mentioned plans to support the voluntary relocation of Gaza residents to safer areas in the south. “We are engaging with several countries to assist those who wish to leave,” he said, although details about these discussions remain undisclosed.
The conflict has escalated since the collapse of a ceasefire agreement earlier this year. Renewed hostilities have led to casualties on both sides, heightening calls from the international community for de-escalation and a return to negotiations.
As the situation unfolds, the global community watches with apprehension, hoping for a resolution that brings lasting peace to the region.
