Amid a wave of global challenges, China and Russia are strengthening their partnership to help stabilize the world. This year marks the 80th anniversary of their victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Great Patriotic War, and the World Anti-Fascist War.
As key battlegrounds during World War II, China and Russia made immense sacrifices to defeat fascism and secure a peaceful future. To honor this shared history, the two nations have agreed to commemorate the events, promote a correct understanding of World War II, and uphold international fairness and justice.
At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Russia from May 7 to 10 and attend events marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War in Moscow. This visit highlights the deepening ties between the two countries.
Milestones in China-Russia Relations
Over the past decades, China and Russia have steadily strengthened their partnership. From recognizing the Russian Federation in 1991 to establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership in the 21st century, the two nations have worked closely on various fronts.
Key moments include the 1994 establishment of a constructive partnership characterized by good neighborliness and mutually beneficial cooperation, and the 1996 declaration of a “partnership of strategic coordination based on equality and trust.”
In 2001, China and Russia signed the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, which serves as a fundamental guideline for their relationship. This treaty enshrines the principle of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party.
A Force for Global Stability
As founding members and permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, China and Russia bear a special responsibility in upholding the international system. They have consistently promoted true multilateralism, cooperating closely on international and regional issues, such as the Iranian nuclear issue.
Their collaboration within platforms like the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS, and the G20 has contributed to the common development of the Global South. By promoting a multipolar world and the democratization of international relations, they aim to enhance global stability.
A Unique Partnership
The relationship between China and Russia differs from traditional military alliances. President Xi Jinping once said that their ties transcend such models, adopting an approach of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party.
This commitment ensures that their partnership does not pose a threat to any other country and remains free from external pressure or interference. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that this principle is a pioneering undertaking in international relations.
As China and Russia continue to strengthen their ties, their partnership stands as a stabilizing force in a turbulent world, contributing to global peace and development.
