China Handles 1089 Million Entry exit Trips During May Day Holiday

May Day Rush: China’s Border Crossings Hit 10.89 Million

China’s border inspection agencies managed a staggering 10.89 million entry and exit trips during the five-day May Day holiday that concluded on Monday, marking a 28.7 percent increase from the same period last year, according to the National Immigration Administration.

The administration reported on Tuesday that the daily number of border crossings peaked on May 3, with over 2.2 million trips recorded—a significant surge reflecting the growing mobility during the holiday period.

Of the total trips, travelers from the Chinese mainland accounted for approximately 5.77 million journeys. Visitors from Hong Kong, Macao, and the Taiwan region made up 4 million trips, while travelers from abroad contributed 1.11 million trips.

All three categories showed notable growth compared to the previous year. Trips by mainland travelers increased by 21.2 percent, those by visitors from Hong Kong, Macao, and the Taiwan region rose by 37.1 percent, and trips by foreign travelers jumped by 43.1 percent, as noted by the administration.

The substantial rise in border crossings during the May Day holiday highlights China’s ongoing recovery in international travel and cross-border exchanges after pandemic-related restrictions eased.
