Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended his congratulations to Friedrich Merz on his election as the new Chancellor of Germany. In a message sent on Tuesday, President Xi emphasized the strong partnership between China and Germany, which he described as “all-round strategic partners” since establishing diplomatic relations 53 years ago.
“China and Germany have treated each other with mutual respect, trust, and equality,” Xi noted. He highlighted the two nations’ history of mutually beneficial cooperation, stating that they have become good partners advancing together and promoting steady development through high-level collaboration.
Amid global challenges marked by transformation and upheaval, President Xi underscored the importance of peace, development, and cooperation. “As the world’s second- and third-largest economies, China and Germany should uphold fairness and justice, deepen exchanges, strengthen solidarity, and work together to promote an equitable and orderly multipolar world,” he said.
Xi expressed his readiness to work with Chancellor Merz to open a new chapter in China-Germany relations, aiming to guide China-European Union cooperation in the right direction and promote global peace, stability, and prosperity.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang also sent his congratulations to Merz. Premier Li highlighted the remarkable results of practical cooperation between China and Germany in various fields. “Equality, mutual benefit, cooperation, and win-win outcomes are the historical choices made by both countries,” Li stated.
He expressed hope for establishing a sound working relationship with Chancellor Merz, deepening exchanges, enhancing understanding, and building consensus to enrich the China-Germany strategic partnership.
Friedrich Merz was elected as Germany’s new Chancellor on May 6, taking over the leadership of Europe’s largest economy.
