Pakistan claimed early Thursday that it shot down six Indian fighter jets, escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The Pakistani Minister of Defense announced in a televised address at around 4:30 a.m. local time on May 7 that the country’s forces had downed the jets.
The Indian Defense Ministry on Wednesday stated it had conducted strikes on targets in Pakistan and the Pakistan-administered regions of Kashmir. The action was reportedly in response to a terror attack on April 22 in the Pahalgam area of the India-administered Kashmir, which resulted in over 20 civilian deaths.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for both India and Pakistan to exercise military restraint and engage in dialogue to defuse the situation.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have historically centered around the disputed region of Kashmir, with both countries claiming the territory in full but controlling parts of it.
