80 Years On China Russia Eye a More Equal Orderly Multipolar World

China and Russia Commemorate WWII Victory, Eye Multipolar World Order

As the world grapples with rising unilateralism and economic coercion, China and Russia are commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, known globally as World War II. This joint remembrance serves as a powerful reminder of the hard-won peace and stability achieved eight decades ago.

On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Russia for a state visit and to attend celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War. Both nations made significant sacrifices and historic contributions to secure victory in the war.

Strengthening Peace Through Unity

“The Chinese and Russian peoples are both great peoples defined by heroic legacies. Eighty years ago, our peoples won the anti-fascist war through heroic struggles,” President Xi wrote in a signed article in the Russian Gazette newspaper ahead of his arrival in Russia. “During the World Anti-Fascist War, the Chinese and Russian peoples fought shoulder to shoulder and supported each other.”

The war involved nearly every part of the world, resulting in over 100 million casualties. In 2015, during the 70th anniversary of the victory, President Xi honored Chinese veterans and international allies who aided in the struggle, highlighting the shared sacrifices made for peace.

Promoting Global Justice and Order

Amidst increasing global challenges and uncertainties, China remains committed to an independent foreign policy of peace. Under President Xi’s leadership, the nation has actively participated in UN peacekeeping missions and strengthened partnerships worldwide.

“China and the Soviet Union were among the first to sign the UN Charter. Our permanent membership in the UN Security Council is a product of history, earned through blood and sacrifice,” Xi noted in his article. “The more turbulent and complex the international situation becomes, the more we must uphold and defend the authority of the UN.”

He emphasized the importance of promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world and fostering inclusive economic globalization. For Xi, peace and development are inseparable, and sustainable development is key to a secure future.

“We should be guardians of historical memory, partners in national development and rejuvenation, and champions of global fairness and justice, and work together to forge a brighter future for humanity,” he wrote.
