Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing on Friday, committing to deepen strategic cooperation between their nations. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War.
President Xi emphasized the importance of advancing key projects within the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, a vital part of the Belt and Road Initiative. He highlighted that China and Myanmar share a community of common destiny, working together through challenges and supporting each other.
“China will uphold principles of good-neighborliness, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness,” Xi stated. “We aim to bring more benefits to our peoples by building a community with a shared future.”
In light of the recent strong earthquake in Myanmar, President Xi noted that China was the first to send rescue forces and provide emergency humanitarian aid. “We are willing to continue supporting Myanmar in rebuilding efforts,” he added.
Xi also expressed hope that Myanmar would ensure the safety of Chinese personnel and projects within its borders and collaborate in combating cross-border crimes like online gambling and fraud.
Min Aung Hlaing expressed gratitude for China’s swift assistance after the earthquake. “The people of Myanmar will always remember China’s support,” he said. He reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to being a trustworthy neighbor and emphasized the desire to enhance cooperation in economy, trade, and energy.
“Myanmar highly appreciates China’s global initiatives and the concept of building a shared future with neighboring countries,” Min Aung Hlaing remarked. “We are willing to work together to face common challenges.”
