Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday that Russia is proposing direct peace talks with Ukraine to be held in Istanbul on May 15. Speaking from the Kremlin, Putin emphasized the need to “eliminate the root causes of the conflict” and achieve a “long-term, lasting peace” rather than a temporary ceasefire.
“We are proposing that Kyiv resume direct negotiations without any preconditions,” Putin stated in the early hours of Sunday. “We offer the Kyiv authorities to resume negotiations already on Thursday, in Istanbul.”
The proposed talks aim to address the ongoing three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has resulted in significant tensions and unrest in the region. The invitation for dialogue marks a potential turning point in efforts to restore stability.
Ukrainian officials have yet to respond publicly to Putin’s proposal. The international community watches closely, hopeful that these talks could pave the way for peace and improved relations between the two nations.
