International Use of Chinese Social Sciences Platform Rises by 34

Global Interest in Chinese Social Sciences Platform Soars by 34%

The use of China’s National Center for Philosophy and Social Sciences Documentation (NCPSSD) is booming internationally! In 2024, overseas visits to the platform jumped by an impressive 34.2% compared to last year, as shared at an academic symposium in Beijing on Friday.

Hosted by the Library of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the NCPSSD, the symposium unveiled two important reports: the 2024 Report on the Most Popular Journals and the 2024 User Usage Analysis Report. These findings show how the platform is making waves globally and helping spread Chinese academic journals around the world.

International users were particularly interested in journals like Qiushi, the official publication of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, as well as Religious Studies, Research in Education Development, Archaeology, and Jiangsu Higher Education.

Since its first release in 2018, the journal popularity report has been working to boost the impact and visibility of Chinese academic publications, contributing to the creation of a unique knowledge system in the humanities and social sciences.

This year marked the first publication of the user analysis report, which offers detailed stats on how the platform is used by institutions and individuals, both in China and overseas, as well as on social media. It digs into user behavior changes and highlights popular content, providing useful insights for future improvements.

Led by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the NCPSSD has grown into the world’s biggest open-access platform for Chinese-language philosophy and social sciences research. With over 27 million data records, it serves more than 90,000 domestic institutions and 1,300 overseas institutions. There are over eight million registered users across 197 countries and regions, and the platform has been visited more than 1.6 billion times!

The two-day conference is also looking at how artificial intelligence can boost academic journals’ quality. On Saturday, over 80 representatives from Chinese academic journals will get together to talk about AI in academic publishing, exploring new opportunities and tackling challenges.

The event will wrap up with a proposal on using AI responsibly in academic journals, aiming to guide the industry toward ethical and innovative practices.

“Embracing AI in academic publishing opens up exciting possibilities, but we need to make sure we’re doing it responsibly,” said one symposium representative. “It’s about balancing innovation with ethics.”
