In a display of skill and determination, China’s second seed Wang Chuqin breezed past Wong Chun-ting of Hong Kong in straight games to secure his spot in the men’s singles round of 16 at the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.
The first game was tightly contested, with Wang edging out a 12-10 victory. He then displayed remarkable patience, taking the second game 11-6 after Wong hit wide on a prolonged rally. Maintaining his aggressive style, Wang dominated the next two games 11-5 and 11-7, sealing a convincing win.
Wang will face Simon Gauzy of France in the next round, after Gauzy eliminated China’s Lin Gaoyuan 4-2 earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Wang’s compatriot Liang Jingkun advanced to the last 16 by defeating Portugal’s Marcos Freitas 11-8, 11-2, 11-5, 16-14. Liang is set to compete against England’s Tom Jarvis in the next match.
On the women’s side, China’s Wang Yidi secured an effortless four-game victory over Egypt’s Hana Goda in the round of 32. After clinching the first game 11-7, Wang overcame a close second game 12-10. Her speed proved too much for Goda, and she took the next two games 11-4 and 11-7 to advance. Wang will face either Romania’s Andreea Dragoman or France’s Prithika Pavade in the round of 16.
China’s Chen Xingtong also booked her place in the last 16, overcoming a challenge from Serbia’s Izabela Lupulesku with scores of 11-1, 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 14-12. Chen will meet Brazil’s 19th-seeded Bruna Takahashi in the next round.
