He called for a common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security strategy, urging nations to “jointly build a road for security of Asia that is shared by all and brings win-win outcomes.”
Today, that vision is more important than ever. With regional conflicts and global instability on the rise, many experts believe that China’s approach offers critical insights for achieving lasting peace in Asia.
Security Through Development
China shares borders with 29 neighboring countries, making regional stability a top priority. As a member of the Asian family, the Chinese mainland attaches great importance to building strong relationships with its neighbors.
At a recent conference on work related to neighboring countries, Chinese leaders emphasized the importance of using high-quality Belt and Road cooperation as a platform to create a better future together.
Through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China has signed cooperation agreements with 25 neighboring countries. These partnerships have not only boosted trade—making China the largest trading partner for 18 of its neighbors—but also strengthened regional ties.
Examples like the China-Laos Railway showcase how economic development can enhance security. The railway has spurred economic growth while reducing cross-border smuggling through joint law enforcement.
Similarly, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has improved local economic conditions, helping to reduce extremism and promote stability.
An Asian Security Model
China recently proposed an Asian security model focused on sharing challenges, seeking common ground, and prioritizing dialogue. This approach encourages countries to work together through consultation, rather than relying on external powers.
In line with this model, China has strengthened relationships with countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia, establishing new dialogue mechanisms on diplomacy and defense.
According to experts, many of China’s neighbors are cautious about external interference and prefer to address regional issues collaboratively. China’s approach aligns with this sentiment, promoting peace and stability in the region.
By fostering political trust and managing sensitive matters through dialogue, China and its neighbors are working together to maintain peace in the Asia-Pacific.
