Macao’s Nam Van Lake has turned into a hub of excitement as the 2025 SJM Macao International Dragon Boat Races kick off. This vibrant three-day festival leads up to the much-anticipated Dragon Boat Festival on May 31.
On May 24 and 25, the lake was alive with energy as 139 local teams paddled fiercely in multiple divisions. The adrenaline rush continues to build for the grand 500-meter races on May 31, where teams from the Chinese mainland, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Egypt will battle it out for the championship title.
Beyond the thrill of the races, the event offers a carnival-like atmosphere along the lakeside. Parades and live performances by cultural and performing arts groups fill the streets with music and dance. Visitors can immerse themselves in interactive zones featuring themed photo spots, booths showcasing local cultural and creative products, delectable specialty snacks, and fun-filled games. Street performers captivate crowds with magic shows, balloon artistry, and dynamic dance routines, amplifying the festive vibes.
The strong participation of youth teams, especially from local universities, highlights not only the athletic prowess of the competitors but also Macao’s commitment to preserving traditional Chinese culture. The event fosters community spirit and international exchange, showcasing the city’s vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
