U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday his consideration to shift $3 billion in federal grants away from Harvard University and redistribute the funds to trade schools across the United States. This move escalates the ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and the Ivy League institution.
“I am considering taking Three Billion Dollars of Grant Money away from a very antisemitic Harvard, and giving it to TRADE SCHOOLS all across our land,” Trump posted on his social media platform. “What a great investment that would be for the USA, and so badly needed!!!”
The administration has previously frozen over $2.6 billion in federal research funding for Harvard and imposed restrictions on the university’s ability to enroll international students. Officials have also requested lists of foreign students attending the university.
Experts suggest that the administration views elite educational institutions as centers of political liberalism and believes they may suppress conservative ideas. Trump’s recent actions have raised concerns among international students, many of whom are uncertain about their future in the United States.
Harvard University has filed a lawsuit challenging the administration’s decisions, labeling them as a “blatant violation” of the law and free speech rights. A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order blocking the plan to revoke the university’s ability to enroll foreign students.
“These actions may seem aimed at hindering others, but in reality, they are closing the door on America’s own future development,” said Diao Daming, a professor at the School of International Studies at Renmin University. “Interfering in universities will further polarize American society and could weaken the country’s educational and technological competitiveness.”
Analysts warn that politicizing the education sector may undermine the global appeal of U.S. higher education institutions, ultimately affecting the nation’s position in the global academic community.
