On the evening of May 24, the ancient city of Tongren in Guizhou Province came alive with the vibrant sounds and sights of the Dragon Invitation Ceremony for the Bijiang Dragon Boat Race. The event blended traditional rituals with lively folk customs, celebrating the cultural significance of the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival.
As dusk settled, the ceremony commenced at the historic Dongshan Temple. The rhythmic beating of drums and gongs echoed along the stone pathways, creating a solemn yet exhilarating atmosphere. Ceremony hosts, clad in traditional attire, descended the temple steps accompanied by dragon guardians. They offered heartfelt prayers for favorable weather and peace, invoking blessings for the dragon boat race ahead.
The festivities continued at Wenmiao Square, where over 300 dancers formed a spectacular 1,000-meter-long bamboo dragon. Circling around a central eight-wind drum, the drummers set the pace as dancers moved in harmony, symbolizing unity and strength. The air was filled with chants and cheers as the parade progressed, embodying the spirited essence of the festival.
The climax of the evening unfolded as dragon boats took to the waters of the Jinjiang River. Rowers synchronized their strokes to the beat of drums, while flags fluttered in the breeze. The excitement on the river was mirrored by thousands of spectators lining the shores, their enthusiastic cheers blending with the sounds of the boats cutting through the water. Above, a dazzling drone display illuminated the night sky, forming phrases like “Dragon Soaring over Jinjiang River” and “Bijiang Welcomes You,” adding a modern touch to the traditional celebration.
Bijiang District is renowned for its rich dragon boat racing heritage. Since 2008, it has hosted significant events such as the International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament and the China Traditional Dragon Boat Race. This year’s races are scheduled for May 30 and 31, promising more thrilling competitions and cultural festivities.
The revival of these ancient traditions not only preserves cultural heritage but also brings communities together, offering both locals and visitors an immersive experience of the Dragon Boat Festival’s vibrant customs.
