China and the Cook Islands are gearing up to strengthen their partnership, focusing on key areas like marine resource development and tackling climate change. This renewed commitment aims to support sustainable development and improve the livelihoods of people in both nations.
The pledge was made during a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Cook Islands’ Foreign Minister Tingika Elikana in Xiamen City, southeast China’s Fujian Province. The meeting coincided with the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
“China always values its relations with the Cook Islands and is a trustworthy and reliable partner,” said Wang Yi. He emphasized the importance of both countries leveraging their complementary strengths and deepening cooperation. “We support the Cook Islands in safeguarding its national sovereignty and choosing a development path suited to its own conditions,” he added.
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by small island nations, Wang Yi acknowledged the Cook Islands’ concerns about climate change. “China is willing to work together to build a fair and win-win global climate governance system,” he assured.
Foreign Minister Tingika Elikana expressed his appreciation for China’s longstanding support. “The Cook Islands regards China as an important partner,” he said. “We are willing to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields to advance our bilateral relations.”
Elikana also highlighted the significance of the China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. He expressed hope that the gathering would create new opportunities to enhance cooperation between China and Pacific island countries and strengthen solidarity among island nations.
The budding partnership between China and the Cook Islands reflects a broader trend of collaboration among Global South countries, aiming for mutual assistance and shared progress.
