Chinese Mainland Affirms Commitment to Cross straits Exchanges

Chinese Mainland Urges Stronger Cross-Strait Exchanges with Taiwan

The Chinese mainland remains committed to promoting active exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, aiming to benefit people on both sides, a spokesperson announced on Wednesday.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized that the widespread public opinion in Taiwan favors peace, development, and enhanced collaboration. “The desire of people across the Strait to strengthen bonds and the enthusiasm of Taiwan compatriots to participate in events like the Straits Forum cannot be suppressed,” Chen stated during a regular press briefing.

The authorities are accelerating preparations for the 17th Straits Forum, with details to be announced soon, Chen added. Since launching in 2009, the forum has been a vital platform for fostering extensive interactions and cooperation between the two sides.

Chen criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan for imposing restrictions on residents attending the forum. He described it as another attempt to obstruct cross-strait exchanges. “This exposes their intent to suppress people-to-people exchanges and proves that Lai Ching-te’s claims of willingness to engage with the mainland are empty words,” he said.

Lai Ching-te is a prominent figure within the DPP and is seen as a potential leader in Taiwan.

Regarding the resumption of direct sea passenger routes across the Taiwan Strait, Chen mentioned that a full restoration would greatly facilitate travel and exchanges. “There are no obstacles from the mainland side,” he noted, highlighting that all necessary preparations have been made. He urged the island to listen to public and industry demands and promptly resume services.
