Cosplayers Bring China’s Animation Icons to Life at CPOPwave Expo

At the heart of Hangzhou’s bustling CPOPwave exhibition, vibrant cosplayers and enthusiastic fans are breathing life into China’s most iconic animation characters. The expo, set against industrial-chic backdrops and immersive installations, showcases 20 of the top Chinese intellectual properties (IPs) — from films and games to novels — that are redefining pop culture worldwide.

"Animation’s youthful energy makes it the perfect medium to share China’s stories with the rest of the world," says Li Ming, a cosplayer dressed as a character from the popular series Legend of Luo Xiaohei. "Events like CPOPwave amplify our culture’s impact and connect us with fans globally."

The rise of Chinese animation, or "guoman," has been meteoric, resonating with audiences far beyond the country’s borders. With compelling storytelling and rich artistry, these animations are highlighting contemporary Chinese narratives and traditional folklore alike.

"It’s exciting to see our characters gaining international recognition," remarks Zhao Wei, another cosplayer portraying a warrior from The King’s Avatar. "We feel like ambassadors of Chinese culture."

As the exhibition draws visitors from around the world, it’s clear that China’s animation boom is more than a trend — it’s a cultural movement that’s making a significant mark on the global stage.
