China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, has called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, urging swift action to alleviate the escalating humanitarian crisis.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Fu emphasized the urgent need to halt the conflict that has intensified since May 16. “Extending the conflict will not lead to the release of hostages; it will only result in more death and hatred,” he stated.
The situation in Gaza has deteriorated rapidly, with over 1,000 civilians reportedly killed in the past two weeks alone. Fu stressed that all parties must abide by international humanitarian law, calling on Israel to ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance and to protect civilian facilities and aid workers.
“Abiding by international humanitarian law is an undeniable obligation for all parties,” Fu asserted. He urged Israel to lift the blockade and fully restore access to humanitarian supplies, supporting organizations like the United Nations in their relief efforts.
The envoy highlighted that Gaza and the West Bank are integral parts of the Palestinian state, and the international community must oppose any attempts to annex these regions or forcibly displace their populations. He appealed to the United States to adopt a fair and responsible approach and to take practical actions.
Fu reiterated China’s support for the “two-state solution” as the only viable path to peace. “China will continue to work with the international community to help end the Gaza conflict, alleviate the humanitarian disaster, achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, and restore peace and stability to the Middle East,” he affirmed.
