The city of Tongren in southwest China’s Guizhou Province came alive on May 30, 2025, as vibrant dragon boat races kicked off national celebrations for the Dragon Boat Festival. The Chinese Traditional Dragon Boat Competition (Guizhou · Tongren · Bijiang) launched one day ahead of the festival, marking a grand start to the cultural festivities.
Sixty teams from across the country converged on Tongren to compete in 500-meter straight-course races. The competition featured four categories: men’s and women’s traditional rowing styles and freestyle rowing. Spectators were treated to a spectacle that blended speed, strength, and tradition, highlighting both the athleticism and cultural significance of dragon boat racing.
Enthusiastic crowds lined the riverside, cheering on the teams as the brightly colored boats sliced through the water. Tourists and locals alike immersed themselves in the thrilling two-day event, experiencing Tongren’s unique charm and the rich traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Tongren holds a special place in the celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival. Designated as one of six national demonstration cities for the 2025 “Our Festival · Dragon Boat Festival” cultural event, the city showcases dragon boat racing as a treasured activity embraced by multiple ethnic groups. In 2011, Tongren’s dragon boat racing was added to the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List, boosting local cultural tourism and preserving this timeless tradition.
