Shangri la Dialogue 2025 Kicks off in Singapore

Global Leaders Gather in Singapore for Shangri-La Dialogue 2025

Singapore is abuzz as the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s premier defense and security summit, kicked off on Friday amid escalating global tensions. The three-day event has attracted representatives from 47 countries, including ministers, defense chiefs, senior officials, and leading academics.

This year’s dialogue sees a significant turnout, with 40 ministerial-level delegates and 20 chiefs of defense forces in attendance, according to the Singapore Ministry of Defense. The Chinese mainland is represented by a delegation from the National Defense University of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered the keynote speech on Friday night, emphasizing the shared responsibility of Asia and Europe in maintaining the global order. “We must work together to prevent the disintegration of the international system,” he stated.

On Saturday, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to outline America’s new ambitions for Indo-Pacific security. Observers note that he faces challenges in reassuring Asian allies who remain cautious about President Donald Trump’s policies, particularly on trade.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will also address the summit, highlighting Malaysia’s strategic leadership as the current chair of ASEAN. His speech is expected to focus on navigating global geopolitical uncertainties and fostering regional stability.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, is scheduled to speak, further emphasizing Europe’s engagement in Asian security matters.

Key topics at the dialogue include regional cooperation, U.S. security policies, and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The effects of widespread U.S. tariffs are also a hot topic, as leaders seek to navigate an increasingly complex and multipolar security landscape.

The Shangri-La Dialogue continues through Sunday, providing a crucial platform for global leaders to discuss pressing security challenges.
