Paris, France — China’s Zhang Shuai and El Salvador’s Marcelo Arevalo have stormed into the French Open mixed doubles quarterfinals with a straight-sets victory over South America’s Luisa Stefani and Maximo Gonzalez.
The dynamic duo secured a 6-3, 7-5 win in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros on Saturday. Zhang, 36, reaches the mixed doubles last eight in Paris for the second consecutive year.
The match began with Zhang and Arevalo dominating the first set, taking it comfortably at 6-3. The second set saw more resistance from Stefani and Gonzalez, but Zhang and Arevalo broke serve in the crucial 11th game. They then held serve to clinch the set 7-5 and seal their spot in the quarterfinals.
Next up, Zhang and Arevalo will face Mexico’s Giuliana Olmos and Britain’s Lloyd Glasspool as they continue their quest for the title.
In other action, China’s Jiang Xinyu and her teammate Robert Galloway of the USA are set to compete against Italy’s Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, with a quarterfinal berth on the line.
