Continuous heavy rainfall in southwest China’s Yunnan Province has led to severe geological disasters, causing house collapses and road blockages, and affecting thousands of residents.
As of 8 p.m. on Sunday, torrential rains in Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture had impacted 5,885 people from 1,652 households. The downpour damaged 27 houses and destroyed or damaged 16 bridges. Road disruptions were reported at 97 locations, hindering transportation and daily life.
A popular scenic area and a sightseeing platform were temporarily closed to ensure public safety. By 8 p.m., authorities in Nujiang had urgently relocated 1,797 residents to safer areas. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far.
In Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the situation is similarly critical. Landslides, mudslides, and floods have blocked multiple roads, and dense fog is complicating rescue and repair efforts. The Meri Snow Mountain scenic zone was temporarily closed after flash floods forced the evacuation of 300 tourists.
Local transport authorities in Diqing have deployed workers and machinery to repair the damaged roads. In Deqen County, local fire departments rescued 138 trapped residents and relocated 331 others to safety.
Meteorological authorities are warning that more rainfall is expected in both prefectures in the coming days, maintaining a high risk of landslides, mudflows, and flash floods. Residents are urged to stay alert and follow safety guidelines issued by local officials.
