Historic Dragon Boat Race Celebrated in China’s Dragon Boat Town

The bustling town of Hele in Wanning City came alive as twelve vibrant dragon boat teams took to the waters during the annual Dragon Boat Festival. Known as one of the cradles of dragon boat culture in Hainan Province, Hele holds a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts.

Awarded the title of \”China’s Dragon Boat Town\” by the China Dragon Boat Association in 2015, Hele has nurtured this tradition since the Song Dynasty (960-1276). The centuries-old event not only showcases exhilarating races but also preserves a significant cultural heritage for future generations.

Participants and spectators alike gathered along the riverbanks, cheering as the intricately designed boats, each adorned with vibrant colors and dragon heads, sliced through the water in unison with the rhythmic beating of drums. The festival is a testament to the community’s spirit and dedication to maintaining their ancestral customs.

The Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated across China, commemorates the ancient poet Qu Yuan. In Hele Town, the festival takes on added significance, reflecting both the historical importance and the local commitment to keeping traditions alive.
