Beijing, June 1 – China has expressed strong dissatisfaction with a recent joint statement by the United States, Japan, Australia, and the Philippines pledging to intensify maritime defense cooperation targeting China.
Speaking at a regular press conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticized the U.S. and its allies for “hyping up the so-called China threat” and “stoking confrontation” over issues related to the East China Sea and the South China Sea. The joint statement was released during the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore.
“Bloc politics and group confrontation reflect a Cold War mentality that is outdated and unwelcome in the region,” Lin stated. “Such actions will not solve any problems, nor will they intimidate China.”
Lin reiterated China’s commitment to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. He urged the U.S. and its allies to stop misrepresenting facts and cease forming exclusive cliques that interfere with regional efforts to resolve disputes through dialogue and consultation.
“We urge the United States and its allies to stop undermining the shared pursuit of peace and stability in the region,” Lin added.
