China has taken a significant leap in aviation technology with the AES100, its first independently developed 1,000-kilowatt-class civil turboshaft engine, securing a production license and landing a sales contract. The Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) announced the milestone on Thursday, marking a new era for the nation’s low-altitude economy and general aviation industry.
The AES100 engine fully complies with international airworthiness standards, showcasing China’s ability to develop advanced aviation technology on par with global benchmarks. The production license, issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, authorizes manufacturers to produce civil aviation engines following approved designs and strict quality assurance systems. This qualification is essential in the aircraft manufacturing sector.
“The granting of this production license signifies China’s capability to independently develop and manufacture advanced civil turboshaft engines,” said Li Gaiqi, chief designer of the AES100 engine. “This achievement is of great importance for serving the low-altitude economy and supporting the general aviation industry.”
Designed for versatility, the AES100 can maintain stable operations in challenging conditions such as ice, heavy rain, and strong electromagnetic environments. It boasts high safety standards, cost-effectiveness, and broad environmental adaptability. The engine excels in key performance indicators like energy efficiency and service life, reaching advanced international levels, according to the AECC.
The engine is suitable for 5-to-6-tonne twin-engine helicopters and 3-to-4-tonne single-engine helicopters, as well as tiltrotor aircraft and other aerial vehicles. Its capabilities open doors for various missions, including transport, sightseeing, patrols, and rescue operations.
The breakthrough with the AES100 not only strengthens China’s aviation industry but also paves the way for future innovations in aerospace technology.
