China and Spain Strengthen Ties, Pledge to Uphold Multilateralism
In a significant move to bolster international cooperation, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with Spanish King Felipe VI on Thursday. The meeting saw both nations pledging to deepen their partnership and uphold the principles of multilateralism and free trade.
Vice President Han conveyed President Xi Jinping’s greetings to King Felipe VI, expressing appreciation for the Spanish royal family’s long-standing support for China-Spain relations. “China values its friendship with Spain and is eager to enhance cooperation in areas like new energy, agriculture, electric vehicles, and the digital economy,” Han stated. He also emphasized the importance of cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries.
Highlighting shared views on major international issues, Han noted that China and Spain are positive forces in defending multilateralism and promoting global governance. “We are ready to work with Spain and Europe to safeguard the international system centered on the United Nations and contribute to world peace and development,” he added.
King Felipe VI, recalling his enjoyable visits to China, expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral ties further. “Spain admires China’s achievements in new energy and high-speed railways,” the king remarked. “We are ready to enhance cooperation and advance our partnership.”
Amid complex global changes, the king acknowledged China’s active and stabilizing role on the world stage. He affirmed Spain’s support for multilateralism and free trade, emphasizing a willingness to coordinate with China in international institutions to promote sustainable global development.
The leaders also exchanged views on significant issues such as major-country relations, the Ukraine crisis, and the Palestinian issue, underscoring their commitment to addressing global challenges collaboratively.
