Chinese Olympic Champion Gong Xiangyu Heads to U.S. Pro Volleyball League

Chinese Olympic gold medalist Gong Xiangyu announced on Friday that she will join League One Volleyball (LOVB) in the United States for the upcoming season, marking her first ever move to an overseas club.

At 28, Gong has established herself as one of the world’s top opposite hitters, playing a pivotal role in China’s triumphs at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2019 World Cup. After completing her domestic season with the Jiangsu team at this year’s Chinese National Games, she’s ready to embrace new challenges abroad.

“Joining LOVB is an invaluable opportunity to experience a new volleyball culture,” Gong shared. “My main goals are to develop my skills, broaden my perspective, and enhance my overall performance to better contribute to the national team.”

Gong began her professional journey with the Jiangsu team at the age of 18, securing two Chinese Volleyball League titles along the way.

“The Jiangsu team provided the platform that launched my career and gave me the chance to be selected for the national team. Their support made this move possible,” she acknowledged.

Despite her move to the U.S., Gong emphasized her unwavering commitment to representing China on the international stage.

“Wearing the national jersey remains my greatest honor. I’m deeply grateful to the Chinese Volleyball Association and national team leadership for their strong backing of this transfer,” she said.

Currently, Gong is preparing for the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Hong Kong leg and is expected to compete in the World Women’s Volleyball Championship from August 22 to September 7.

LOVB is a new professional women’s league in the United States, set to announce next season’s fixtures this fall. Gong’s move is seen as a significant step in fostering international exchange in volleyball, inspiring many young athletes worldwide.
