Chinese Meteorologist Xu Jianmin Wins WMO’s Highest Honor for Satellite Innovations

Chinese meteorologist Xu Jianmin has been awarded the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) highest accolade, the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) Prize, recognizing his groundbreaking contributions to meteorological science and satellite technology.

Xu, a leading figure in the development of the Chinese mainland’s meteorological satellite system, will receive the prestigious award at the WMO Executive Council meeting in 2026. The IMO Prize honors individuals who have made outstanding achievements in meteorology, hydrology, and international cooperation in these fields.

An academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering since 1997, Xu played a pivotal role in designing the foundational architecture of the FengYun (FY) Meteorological Satellite Ground System. His innovative work has been instrumental in solving critical challenges in FY satellite navigation and advancing key technologies for satellite-based meteorological products.

Under Xu’s leadership, the global use of FY satellite data has expanded significantly, enhancing observation, forecasting, and meteorological services worldwide. His efforts have not only bolstered China’s capabilities in weather prediction and climate monitoring but have also contributed to international meteorological cooperation.

The WMO praised Xu’s dedication to advancing meteorological science, highlighting his impact on improving weather forecasting accuracy and supporting disaster prevention efforts globally.

As the world faces increasing challenges from climate change and extreme weather events, Xu’s achievements underscore the importance of international collaboration and innovation in meteorology.
