Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, emphasized the importance of mutual benefit in China-U.S. economic relations during his speech at the 2023 Annual Gala of the U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC) on Wednesday.
Speaking under the theme “Seeking a New Path for U.S.-China Relations,” Ambassador Xie highlighted how decades of economic and trade cooperation have brought significant benefits not only to both nations but also to the global community.
“As global economic growth remains sluggish, cooperation is the only way out,” Xie stated, warning that protectionism is akin to “drinking poison to quench thirst.” He underscored that China’s development presents an opportunity for the world, adding, “Believing in China is believing in a better tomorrow, and investing in China is investing in the future.”
The ambassador pointed out that China and the United States are at a critical juncture, facing a choice between win-win cooperation or a scenario where both could lose. He stressed the importance of following the strategic guidance of the two heads of state and faithfully implementing the important consensus reached between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden during their phone call on June 5 this year.
“China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests are the red line that should not be crossed,” Xie emphasized. He called for mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation as principles that must be upheld in the bilateral relationship.
Xie also encouraged the USCBC and the U.S. business community to continue advocating for exchanges and dialogue. He urged them to take concrete actions to facilitate mutually beneficial cooperation, stating that their efforts are crucial in fostering a positive trajectory for China-U.S. relations.
The gala gathered prominent business leaders and officials eager to explore new avenues for collaboration between the world’s two largest economies.
