The Swan Guardian: How One Man Revived Xinjiang’s Swan Bay

Seventeen years ago, the serene banks of the Emin River in Xinjiang’s Tacheng Prefecture were home to just two swans. Today, the river has transformed into a thriving “Swan Bay,” hosting over 180 of these graceful birds and drawing crowds eager to witness their elegance.

This remarkable turnaround is largely credited to the unwavering efforts of local resident Illyar Ily. Moved by the dwindling swan population, Ily took it upon himself to protect the birds. What began as a solitary mission soon evolved into a dedicated team, and eventually inspired the entire community to join in the conservation efforts.

“I couldn’t stand by and watch these beautiful creatures disappear,” Ily shared. With love and perseverance, he has not only safeguarded the swans but also fostered a sense of environmental stewardship among his neighbors.

As he looks to the future, Ily pledges to continue his protection work, hoping that the next generations will carry on his legacy. “It’s not just about the swans,” he said. “It’s about preserving the harmony between humans and nature.”
