Wang Haoxi has made history as the highest-drafted Chinese player in National Hockey League (NHL) history. The 18-year-old defenseman was selected by the San Jose Sharks as the 33rd overall pick in the second round of the NHL Draft in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Standing at an impressive 1.98 meters, Wang, who also goes by the English name Simon, began playing ice hockey at the age of four. Born in Beijing, he led his hometown team to victory in the youth group at this year’s Harbin Asian Winter Games.
Wang’s journey to the NHL included attending the league’s rookie training camp in June, where he showcased his skills and potential. Following his historic selection, Wang expressed gratitude for the support he has received and hopes his achievement will inspire the growth of ice hockey in China.
“First of all, I’m very thankful for all the support from China,” Wang said. “I hope China’s hockey development will be better and better. I hope more Chinese hockey players can be drafted to the NHL and make more histories. I will keep improving myself, work hard in my trainings, and play on the NHL ice as soon as possible.”
Wang’s selection not only marks a personal milestone but also signifies a step forward for Chinese athletes in international ice hockey. His presence in the NHL could pave the way for future talents from China to break into the league.
