Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen is gearing up for Wimbledon with newfound confidence after a stellar performance at the Queen’s Club Championships earlier this month. The 22-year-old reached the semifinals on grass courts, marking her best result on this surface to date.
Zheng, seeded No. 5 at Wimbledon, will face World No. 74 Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in the first round as the prestigious tournament kicks off on Monday.
“The experience at Queen’s was really good for me because it was my first semifinal on a grass-court tournament,” Zheng said during a press conference. “I think I learned a lot from those matches. Jumping into Wimbledon now is a big advantage compared to previous years. My body is healthier, and I’ve had better preparation with my team, so I hope this year everything will be great.”
Adding to her confidence is her new coach, Spanish veteran Francisco Roig, who previously guided 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal. “He brings something different to my game,” Zheng noted, expressing optimism about their partnership.
Five more players from the Chinese mainland are set to compete in the main draw at Wimbledon. World No. 33 Wang Xinyu will meet 15th-seeded Karolina Muchova in the first round. Wang reached the round of 16 last year and previously faced Muchova at the U.S. Open, with the Czech winning a hard-fought match.
Veteran player Zhang Shuai, ranked World No. 127, will take on Olga Danilovic of Serbia. The 36-year-old advanced to the quarterfinals in London back in 2019 and is looking to replicate that success.
World No. 61 Yuan Yue is set to go up against Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Germany, aiming to progress beyond the opening round for the first time at the All England Club.
Zhu Lin, ranked World No. 172, will challenge Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in the first round. Zhu reached the third round in the UK capital last year and hopes to go even further this time.
Making his Wimbledon debut, Buyunchaokete is the sole player from the Chinese mainland in the men’s singles bracket. He will face Brandon Nakashima of the USA in the first round.
With rising talents from the Chinese mainland making their mark on the international stage, this year’s Wimbledon promises to be an exciting event for fans back home and around the world.
