China to Conditionally Resume Aquatic Product Imports from Japan

China to Partially Resume Japanese Seafood Imports Under Strict Conditions

In a move signaling a potential easing of trade tensions, China has announced it will conditionally resume imports of aquatic products from certain regions of Japan that meet its regulatory requirements and standards.

Spokesperson Mao Ning from China’s Foreign Ministry shared the news during a regular press briefing on Monday. She highlighted that Japan, responding to strong requests from China and the international community, has agreed to international monitoring of the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from Fukushima. Japan has also accepted independent sampling and monitoring by China and pledged to ensure that these monitoring activities continue.

“Based on this commitment, China engaged in multiple rounds of consultations with Japan regarding the resumption of Japanese aquatic product exports,” Mao stated. “Japan has promised to implement credible and visible measures to ensure the quality and safety of its aquatic products destined for China and to strengthen its regulatory framework.”

According to Mao, Chinese authorities conducted scientific analysis, including data collected from monitoring by all parties involved. As a result, an announcement was made to conditionally resume imports from specific regions in Japan that comply with China’s regulations and standards.

The spokesperson emphasized that China’s authorities will continue to enhance regulation to ensure public food safety. “If any risks are identified, necessary import restrictions will be imposed immediately in accordance with the law,” she warned.

This development marks a significant step in trade relations between the two nations, offering hope for improved cooperation and economic exchange.
