After 70 Years, Son Brings Father’s Remains Home from Taiwan
In a heartfelt reunion seven decades in the making, 82-year-old Yan Dingzhao has fulfilled his lifelong commitment to bring his father’s remains back to their hometown from Taiwan.
In 1949, during a turbulent period of China’s history, Yan’s father, Yan Luoguo, was conscripted by the Kuomintang and taken from their home on Dongshan Island to Taiwan. Separated by the Taiwan Strait, the family was left in uncertainty as years passed without any news of Luoguo.
It wasn’t until 1983 that the family received word of Luoguo’s passing. The news brought both closure and a renewed determination for Dingzhao to reunite with his father, even if only in spirit.
After years of persistence and with changing times easing cross-strait ties, Dingzhao was finally able to travel to Penghu in 2018. There, he located his father’s resting place and carefully brought his remains back to Dongshan Island.
Surrounded by family and friends, Yan laid his father to rest in their ancestral home, fulfilling a promise made over half a century ago.
“This is a moment I’ve waited my entire life for,” said Yan. “Now, my father is finally home.”
