China has renewed its yellow alert as Typhoon Danas approaches, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to southern regions of the country.
As of 5 a.m. Sunday, Typhoon Danas was located at 21.3 degrees north latitude and 118.1 degrees east longitude, moving northeast at 10 to 15 kilometers per hour while continuing to intensify, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).
From Sunday evening to Monday morning, the typhoon is expected to cross the Taiwan Strait from south to north and may either brush past or make landfall along the western coast of the island of Taiwan.
On Monday, Danas will enter the East China Sea, gradually approaching coastal areas from northern Fujian to central and southern Zhejiang provinces, the NMC reported.
Strong gales are forecast from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday in parts of the South China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, waters east of Taiwan, the Bashi Channel, sections of the East China Sea, and coastal regions of Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, and Taiwan Island.
Heavy to torrential rainfall is expected during the same period in southeastern Zhejiang, northeastern Fujian, and across Taiwan Island. Some areas may experience extreme downpours, with precipitation reaching up to 230 millimeters.
China’s weather warning system uses a four-tier, color-coded system for typhoons, with red representing the most severe alert, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
Due to the impact of the typhoon, sea areas near Taiwan Island, the South China Sea, and the coastal waters off Fujian, Guangdong, and Zhejiang are expected to experience strong waves from Sunday noon to Monday noon, according to the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center.
