China’s Zhang Shuai continues to make waves at Wimbledon, advancing to the mixed doubles quarterfinals alongside El Salvador’s Marcelo Arevalo. The duo secured a hard-fought victory over China’s Jiang Xinyu and Britain’s Luke Bambridge, winning 7-6(6), 6-3 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Sunday.
The No. 2 seeds faced a challenging first set, with both pairs exchanging breaks of serve before heading into a tense tiebreaker. Zhang and Arevalo held their nerve in the crucial moments, edging out their opponents 8-6 to claim the first set.
In the second set, Zhang and Arevalo elevated their game, displaying impressive first-serve statistics with a 71% accuracy rate and a dominant 79% win rate on first serves. They broke their opponents’ serve twice without facing a single break point, sealing the set 6-3 and clinching their spot in the quarterfinals.
The pair will next face American Desirae Krawczyk and Britain’s Neal Skupski for a chance to advance to the semifinals.
Earlier, in the women’s doubles third round, Zhang and Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova were unable to progress past the round of 16. They fell to Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 4-6, 0-6.
The match, delayed by rain, saw a tightly contested first set. Zhang displayed sharp net play during Alexandrova’s service games. Both teams exchanged breaks and were level at 4-4 before the No. 4 seeds secured a crucial break to take the first set 6-4.
The rain continued to disrupt play in the second set, affecting Zhang and Alexandrova’s rhythm. Struggling to regain their composure, the No. 14 seeds were out of sync and ultimately lost the set 0-6, concluding their run in the women’s doubles competition.
