China’s Ministry of Water Resources has activated a Level-IV emergency response for flooding as Typhoon Danas approaches the eastern provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian. The typhoon, the fourth of the year according to China’s meteorological authorities, made landfall on the island of Taiwan late Sunday night before moving back out to sea early Monday morning.
Forecasts predict Danas will make a second landfall between Taizhou in Zhejiang and Ningde in Fujian between Tuesday afternoon and evening. From Monday to Thursday, the typhoon is expected to bring heavy rainfall to affected regions, with southeastern Zhejiang, the eastern coast of Fujian, and central-eastern Jiangxi Province likely to experience intense downpours.
Rivers such as the Qiantang River in Zhejiang and its tributaries are anticipated to see significant rises in water levels. The ministry warns that some small and medium-sized rivers in the storm zone could exceed warning levels, posing high risks of mountain torrents in hilly areas.
The Ministry of Water Resources is closely monitoring Typhoon Danas and guiding local water authorities on preparation measures. A team has been dispatched to Zhejiang to assist with local typhoon response efforts.
China operates a four-tier flood control emergency response system, with Level I being the most severe.
