As China and the European Union (EU) celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has called on the EU to adopt a more objective and rational view of China. Speaking at a regular press briefing on Wednesday, Mao emphasized the importance of fostering a positive and pragmatic approach to deepen mutual understanding and cooperation.
“It’s an important year for China-EU relations as we build on past achievements and look forward,” Mao remarked. She urged the EU to reassess its mindset towards China, highlighting that the need for “rebalancing” lies within the EU’s perspective, not in the economic and trade relations themselves.
Mao expressed hope that, amidst a volatile global situation, the EU and China could work together to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation. She called for both parties to properly handle differences and frictions to promote sustained, healthy, and stable development in their relations.
“China hopes the EU will realize that what needs rebalancing is its own mindset, not the China-EU economic and trade relations,” Mao said. “It is hoped that the EU will work with China in the same direction.”
The remarks come in response to recent statements by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding China-EU relations. As global challenges persist, China’s message underscores the significance of constructive dialogue and collaboration between the two sides.
