After years of making music in Beijing, musician Shafqat felt a calling back to his roots. Returning to his hometown of Yining City in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, he set out on a mission to infuse new life into the local arts scene.
In 2022, Shafqat founded a unique cultural space in the bustling Liuxing Street, also known as Star Street. This venue is more than just a spot to grab a bite or enjoy live music—it’s a vibrant hub that combines a bookstore, restaurant, bar, and live music stage all under one roof.
“I wanted to create a place where young artists could come together, share ideas, and collaborate,” Shafqat said. “Yining City has so much untapped potential, and I believe that fostering a creative community can bring more energy and cultural depth to our city.”
The space has quickly become a magnet for art lovers and cultural enthusiasts. From poetry readings and book launches to live performances featuring local talent, there’s always something happening at Shafqat’s venue. The eclectic atmosphere encourages visitors to immerse themselves in different forms of art, sparking inspiration and connections among the city’s youth.
“It’s amazing to see so many people coming together to celebrate creativity,” said Mei Li, a young poet who frequents the space. “This place has given us a platform to express ourselves and collaborate in ways we never could before.”
Shafqat hopes that his initiative will not only enrich the cultural landscape of Yining City but also inspire others to invest in their communities. “Art has the power to bring people together,” he said. “I believe that by supporting each other, we can create a brighter future for our city.”
