Mexican President Urges U.S. to Curb Drug and Arms Trafficking

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has called on the United States to intensify its efforts to curb drug and arms trafficking across the shared border. Speaking at a recent press conference, López Obrador emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation in addressing these critical issues that impact both nations.

“We are doing our part, but the United States must also step up to its responsibilities,” López Obrador stated. He highlighted that while Mexico is committed to combating drug cartels and illegal trafficking, the flow of illegal weapons from the U.S. into Mexico exacerbates violence and undermines security efforts.

The president expressed hope for a bilateral agreement that respects Mexico’s sovereignty while fostering collaboration on trade, immigration, and security. “We believe that through dialogue and mutual respect, we can reach better terms that benefit both countries,” he said.

Mexico has sent a delegation to Washington to engage in talks aimed at strengthening cooperation on these pressing issues. López Obrador underscored that any agreement must be based on respect for Mexico’s sovereignty, calling it a “non-negotiable principle.”

The call for action comes amid ongoing tensions over trade and immigration policies between the two nations. Both countries face challenges related to drug trafficking and arms smuggling, which have significant social and economic impacts on their populations.
