Traveling across China has just become a lot easier for self-driving enthusiasts. This summer, the Chinese railway system has rolled out a new service allowing travelers to ship their cars directly to popular tourist destinations, sparking excitement among adventure seekers.

Take Ms. Zhang Rui from Chongqing, for example. She had always dreamed of taking a road trip to Lhasa with her child but was deterred by the daunting 2,000-kilometer journey.
“Driving from Chongqing to Lhasa would take me four to five days,” Zhang said. “It’s quite exhausting, and the road conditions can be challenging.”
When she discovered the new car transport service, Zhang didn’t hesitate to book it. She sent her pickup truck by rail and traveled comfortably by train herself, reuniting with her vehicle upon arrival.
“Transporting my truck by rail cost me 4,400 yuan ($616),” she explained. “Compared to driving the whole way, I saved over 40% on expenses like fuel, tolls, and accommodation, not to mention the time saved.”
How the Service Works
According to Zhang Yuliang, an official with the Chongqing railway, the process is smooth and user-friendly. After inspecting the vehicle’s exterior and checking for prohibited items, staff handle the rest.
“Our team ensures the car is safely loaded and transported,” said Zhang. “The car owner just needs to sign a handover form, and we’ll take care of the rest.”
Expanding Destinations
The dedicated car transport line from Chongqing to Lhasa operates twice a week, with an estimated travel time of six to eight days, according to Jian Changyan from the Chongqing Railway Logistics Center. Similar services have been launched connecting Lhasa with other major cities like Chengdu, Beijing, and Shanghai.

“It’s straightforward and convenient,” said Ms. Zhang. “Now, I can enjoy my self-driving adventure without the initial exhausting drive.”
