From the historic city of Xi’an to the bustling metropolis of Beijing, Utah’s One Voice Children’s Choir has been captivating audiences across the Chinese mainland with their harmonious melodies and heartfelt performances. Their journey through China as part of the “Bond with Kuliang: 2025 China-U.S. Youth Choir Festival” has showcased not only their musical talents but also the unifying power of cultural exchange.
In a special feature on The Hub, host Wang Guan reconnected with the American choir to reflect on their experiences since their last visit. The young performers expressed awe at the transformations they’ve witnessed. “It’s incredible to see how much has changed. The cities are vibrant, and the people are so welcoming,” shared one choir member.
Tanner DeWaal, CEO and artistic director of the choir, emphasized the significance of their trip. “Music is a universal language, and being here allows us to build bridges and make connections that transcend words,” he remarked. The choir’s performances have been met with enthusiastic applause, highlighting the shared appreciation for music.
Learning to sing in Chinese was a highlight for many of the singers. “At first, it was challenging, but once we started, it became a beautiful experience,” said another member. “We could feel the audience connecting with us on a deeper level.”
Throughout their journey, the choir members were continually surprised by moments of genuine connection. From impromptu sing-alongs with local students to sharing stories over meals, these interactions left lasting impressions. “These are memories we’ll carry with us forever,” one performer reflected.
In a time of global uncertainties, the One Voice Children’s Choir’s tour serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of fostering understanding and friendship. As they prepare to return home, they hope to share the stories and experiences they’ve gathered, inspiring others to embrace the richness of cultural exchange.
