Green Turtles Back Home to Nest As Xisha Islands Environment Improves

Green Turtle Nesting Soars on China’s Xisha Islands as Environment Thrives

The turquoise waters around China’s Xisha Islands have become a bustling nursery for green turtles this summer. With the rising temperatures ushering in the peak breeding season, conservationists are celebrating a significant increase in nesting activity.

Just last week, staff on Yongxing Island made an exciting discovery: two new nesting sites where green turtles have come ashore to lay their eggs—the first such sites found on the island in years.

Green turtles are not just a symbol of marine biodiversity; they are also a first-class protected animal in China. Out of the seven species of sea turtles worldwide, five glide through Chinese waters, making the region critical for their survival. The Xisha Islands, in particular, boast the country’s largest nesting grounds for these ancient mariners.

Monitoring efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs have revealed a promising trend. As of July 6, conservationists have recorded 81 sea turtle nests in monitored areas around the Xisha Islands—a jump of 30 nests compared to the same period last year.

The newfound nesting activities on Yongxing Island and nearby Zhaoshu Island are more than just numbers; they signal a rejuvenating ecosystem. The expanding habitat range for green turtles suggests that environmental conditions in the Xisha Islands are on the mend, thanks to ongoing conservation work.

The increase in green turtle nesting offers a beacon of hope for marine conservation and underscores the importance of sustained environmental protection. As these gentle giants return to their ancestral nesting grounds, they remind us of the delicate balance of our oceans and the impact we can have in preserving it.
