Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam — At least 18 people have been confirmed dead after a cruise ship capsized on Saturday afternoon in the famed Ha Long Bay. The accident occurred amid strong winds and rough seas, according to reports from the Vietnam News Agency.
The vessel was carrying 53 individuals, including 48 tourists and five crew members, when it overturned. Local newspaper Tuoi Tre (Youth) reported that 10 people have been rescued so far.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly as operations continue in hopes of finding more survivors. Authorities have not yet released the nationalities of the tourists on board.
Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its stunning limestone karsts and emerald waters, is a popular destination attracting millions of visitors each year.
