Over a thousand years ago, herders transported natural salt on the backs of sheep across challenging terrains to places like Purang, Shigatse, India, and Nepal. In return, they bartered for highland barley, tea bricks, cloth, and other essentials, weaving a network of cultural and economic exchange known as the legendary ‘Salt-and-Sheep Route.’
Today, this ancient trade path is being revitalized. The establishment of coarse salt processing facilities is breathing new life into the traditional salt industry. Additionally, the promotion of cultural tourism is attracting visitors eager to experience the unique history and stunning landscapes of the region.
