An urgent plea for global solidarity has been voiced by Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), as she highlights the pressing housing crisis affecting 2.8 billion people worldwide.
In an exclusive interview, Rossbach emphasized the dire need for sustainable solutions to provide safe, affordable, and dignified housing. “The housing crisis is not just about shelters; it’s about the foundation of healthy societies,” she stated.
Rossbach pointed to China’s remarkable urban transformation as a model worth studying. She praised Chinese cities for being people-centered and highlighted how China’s expertise in urban renewal could be applied globally. “China has demonstrated that rapid urbanization can be managed effectively when policies focus on inclusivity and sustainability,” she noted.
The Executive Director called on international communities, especially in the Global South, to learn from successful models like China’s. “We must work together to create cities that prioritize the well-being of all residents,” Rossbach urged.
The housing crisis threatens social stability, public health, and sustainable development worldwide. As urban populations continue to grow, the need for collaborative efforts and innovative solutions becomes increasingly critical.
