China’s crucial role in World War II is a story of resilience and sacrifice that reshaped global history. For 14 years, soldiers and civilians from the Chinese mainland stood firm against the Japanese military, fighting on the main battlefield in the East.
According to Wu Minchao, a researcher at the Institute of Modern History at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China’s steadfast resistance pinned down the bulk of Japan’s forces. This relentless defense not only thwarted Japan’s plans to advance northward against the Soviet Union but also delayed its push south into Southeast Asia.
“China’s prolonged resistance bought precious time for the Allies to prepare their counteroffensive,” Wu explained. “Without China’s sacrifice, the outcome of the war could have been very different.”
After the war, China emerged as a founding member of the United Nations and a permanent member of the Security Council. The nation actively participated in shaping the new international order, making enduring contributions to global peace and development.
