In a groundbreaking move towards clean energy and sustainable development, Chinese Premier Li Qiang has officially launched the construction of the world’s largest hydropower project in Nyingchi, southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region.
The ambitious project, situated on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, will comprise five cascade stations with an estimated investment of 1.2 trillion yuan (approximately $167.8 billion). Once completed, it is expected to triple the energy output of the renowned Three Gorges Dam, potentially generating 300 billion kilowatt-hours annually—a scale unprecedented in the hydropower industry.
