Washington, D.C.—China’s rising tennis stars Wu Yibing and Buyunchaokete have both secured spots in the second round of the Citi Open, showcasing impressive performances on Tuesday.
Wu Yibing delivered a commanding victory over France’s Gael Monfils, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. After both players held serve in their opening games, Wu broke Monfils in the sixth game, capitalizing on two consecutive double faults by the French veteran to take a 4-2 lead. Wu maintained his momentum, sealing the first set 6-3 as Monfils struggled with unforced errors.
The second set saw Wu dominate even further. After an early tie at 1-1, Wu clinched five consecutive games, closing out the match and earning his first ATP Tour win of the season. He will face the No. 10 seed Alexei Popyrin of Australia in the next round.
Meanwhile, Buyunchaokete impressed in his debut at the tournament, defeating Belgium’s David Goffin 6-4, 7-5. In the first set, Buyunchaokete broke Goffin in the third game to gain a 2-1 advantage and went on to secure the set with a love game in the tenth.
The second set was a tighter affair, with both players exchanging breaks in the fifth and sixth games. Buyunchaokete managed a crucial break in the 11th game and then held his serve to clinch the match. He is set to face the seventh seed Alex de Minaur from Australia in the second round.
