China Says Yarlung Zangbo Hydropower Project Safe for Downstream Areas

China has assured that its hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River in the southwest will not adversely affect downstream areas. Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that the construction is beneficial for disaster prevention and mitigation across the entire basin.

Guo highlighted that the project falls within China’s sovereign jurisdiction and aims to accelerate the development of clean energy, significantly improve local people’s well-being, and actively address climate change. He noted that China maintains a highly responsible approach to transboundary river development and possesses rich experience in hydropower projects.

The spokesperson added that the planning, design, and construction of the project strictly adhere to China’s highest industry standards. Environmental protection measures are being implemented, including avoiding key ecologically sensitive areas and preserving the original ecosystem as much as possible.

Guo also mentioned that China has been cooperating with relevant downstream countries through hydrological information sharing, flood control, and disaster mitigation efforts. Necessary communications regarding the hydropower project have been conducted, and China will continue to enhance cooperation with downstream countries for the benefit of the people along the river.
